Following correspondence from the Permanent Secretary for the Department of Infrastructure concerning road safety on the proposed A5 redevelopment, SDLP MLA Daniel McCrossan has said that the road safety assessment provided by the Department is profound.
Mr McCrossan added that the A5 must proceed in order to stop death and carnage on our roads.
The MLA for West Tyrone commentated:
“This assessment is profound and only further compounds the case for the A5 WTC scheme to proceed. The Department has clearly stated that an upgraded A5 will prevent a further potential 2000 collisions and 19 needless fatalities.
“Those holding the scheme back and progressing the Judicial Review case must stop and think about the greater good. The potential death toll from preventing the A5 upgrade has to be wearing hard on their conscience.
“Only last week another young person lost their life on what has become one of the most dangerous roads in Ireland. This takes the A5 death toll to almost 40 in the last 12 years. I do not want to see any more families left devastated. I do not want to see any more young people have their lives taken far too soon. Excuses or tokenistic political stunts must end now.
“I have consistently pressed the Department about the A5 upgrade and I will not stop until we get the outcome the people of the West and North West deserve.
