Perseids meteor shower to be particularly spectacular in NW this week

The annual Perseids meteor shower will be visible over Derry and the North-West this week, and particularly spectacular this year due to low levels of moonlight.

The meteors should be more visible thanks to the extra-dark skies, which are expected to create optimal stargazing conditions, astronomers said.

The Perseids will be visible between August 11 and 14, hitting a peak overnight on Wednesday, with up to 100 shooting stars per hour streaking across the sky.

Because the Moon is approaching its darkest phase, it will not interfere with meteor-watching, according to experts.
