Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said Irish government plans to recruit for inspections on the border are concerning.
Martina Anderson said:
"The fact that the Irish government has issued an EU tender for veterinary border inspections raises serious questions about the Irish government's Brexit preparations.
"As a result of the recklessness of the British government, the Irish government are making preparations for a no-deal Brexit.
“It is concerning however, that the Irish government appear to be making preparations for border inspections after giving assurances they are not countenancing any return to a hard border.
"The Withdrawal Agreement and the backstop it contains avoids the need for any border checks. It must be maintained and the Irish government and the EU must stand behind it and protect it.
"We need to see the Irish government standing firm in the crucial time ahead to ensure the backstop and the interests of Ireland are protected."
