They already deliver what has been described as ‘one of the best value walking tours in Ireland’, but local man Martin McCrossan and his team at City Tours are going to rest on their laurels. They are going a step further to make sure that after Valentine’s Day 2012, their walking tour of the Walled City will be known as simply ‘the best’. All City Tours guided walking tours in the city on February 14 will be free of charge, with complimentary hot drink.

City Tours is one of the North West’s longest established and most successful tour guiding companies. Martin explains that they will be going all out on Valentine’s Day this year to encourage people to ‘walk the Walls’ so they can ‘talk the talk’ when the city hosts the first ever UK city of culture in 2013.

“Next year is going to be a really special one for the city. We will be welcoming visitors from all over the world. Everyone living in Derry and every visitor to the city is a potential ambassador so we all have to do what we can to get the word out that Derry is a ‘must see’ destination for visitors to Ireland.

“The Walls encompass so much of our history and culture from many different perspectives so a walk around the Walls is a wonderful way to learn about our past. In reality though, a lot of local people have never actually walked the Walls – and when they haven’t experienced the walk themselves, it’s harder for them to explain the attraction of a walk around the Walls to visitors. We think that when people know a bit more about their city and its history, they are much more likely to encourage others to come here.”

So as part of their ongoing drive to encourage local people and visitors alike to learn more about the city’s history and culture, on Valentine’s Day, City Tours are not only waiving the charge for their award winning guided walking tour of the Walled City but the company is also offering a complimentary hot drink to everyone on their guided walking tours.

“We thought Valentine’s Day was a really appropriate day for our first ever ‘know your city, love your city’ initiative and we hope it will be the first of many,” says Martin.

Valentine’s Day is a major milestone for city with the official opening of Ebrington Square, the city’s largest urban space.

City Tours offers daily guided walking tour of the Walled City at 10am 12 noon and 2 pm, leaving from outside the Carlisle Road entrance to Foyleside. No booking necessary.
